Where Should I Take a Cruise to? Help!

One of my dreams has been to take a cruise somewhere tropical, or at least a more relaxed area than the tri-state. Sure, I have traveled to summer hotspots, but I've never been on a cruiseship. There's something exciting and old-school about being on a cruise liner and I would really like to reserve a trip for later on in the year.

    My only two concerns are:

    1. How safe is it? Obviously, I'm going all Titanic on y'all and I apologize. Still, I've heard one too many stories about ships submerging into the vast ocean and many about food poisoning.
    2. Where do I go? Unfortunately, there are many options and I suck at making decisions. Cost is most definitely a factor as well but I do understand that cruises do cost a pretty buck.

Anyway, here are my top 10 potential destinations:

    1. Greek Islands
    2. Bahamas
    3. Hawaii
    4. Alaska
    5. South Pacific (i.e. Philippines, Polynesia, Fiji, Tahiti, etc. --yes I've seen the musical and I'm obsessed!)
    6. Florida (I've never been to Disney World mind you!)
    7. The Baltic
    8. Panama (definitely not taking the Prison Break scenarios into consideration)
    9. Virgin Islands
    10. New Zealand (although journeying port from NY would probably be crazy long)

It would help me out a lot if people could give me some pointers or suggestions.

What cruise lines would you recommend from people you know or trips you've taken? Where should I go? Ayuda me por favor!

I've never been on a cruise, but I've always wanted to go on one. I believe they are usually pretty safe.

Instead of Greece I'd consider Croatia: Cleaner, less tourists and not so expensive.

I went on one to Panama -- making stops in Costa Rica and Belize on the way. SO nice.  The water in Belize is so crystal clear, and perfect temperature - warm, not cold like most ocean water. You could see straight to the bottom, no joke. Granted, we were in an area that was only maybe 30 feet deep, but still! We went snorkeling in Belize, and it was fantastic.  I'd highly recommend such a trip. Panama itself wasn't so fantastic, but the stops were amazing.

I also went on one to Alaska two summers two summers ago.  Also amazing!  Even if you're more of a tropical person (as I am) it was great.  The glaciers were breathtaking.  The mountains were beautiful.  The air was crisp and clear.  This trip is also highly recommended.  I loved it, and that's saying a lot for me, because I tend to hate cold weather.

Alaska Cruise :) Heard so many nice things about it -- Hawaii is not bad either

Depends on which one you like better: hot climate or cold climate

I'm getting ready to cruise the western coast of Mexico. I've never done that cruise before. Caribbean cruises are nice. I'd love to go on a Panama cruise.
